WELCOME TO GYMPIE
Gympie is a beautiful country town with the modern-day conveniences that you will find in most cities. Gympie is a city of around 22,000 people and it’s growing.
James Nash discovered gold in 1867 in Gympie and it was originally called Nashville (the name Gympie comes from the gimpy-gimpi plant).
Gympie was put on the map for the town-that-saved Queensland thanks to James Nash lucky streak of finding gold, he found gold right where the Town Hall currently stands.
Queensland was nearly bankrupt at the time, but because of the gold discovered by James Nash, it started the great Gympie Gold Rush which saved the Queensland economy.
Today you will find a whole host of shops, trades and services available – there is even a Target!
Mary Street is the central hub for Gympie. It's there you will find retail shops, local cafes, services and pubs (Did you know that in the Gold Rush days of Gympie that there was actually 72 pubs just on Mary Street alone!)
The parklands in Gympie are beautiful along with the streets in Gympie that are lined with Jacaranda trees, it's great to see all the heritage buildings when going through the town.
